has baffled many by debuting its all-new, 1,200cc V-twin engine in the niche
supermoto market rather than the lucrative adventure touring bike class.
Aprilia, too, has thrown its hat in the ring with the Dorsoduro 750. And now
with Aprilia’s 1200cc Dorso variant, the company from Noale has taken a modest
platform for supermoto-inspired fun and blown the doors off the category.
The Aprilia
Dorsoduro 1200 with lightweight forged wheels, revised engine management
software, slimmed-down bodywork and new graphics. Shedding 5.07lbs over the
previous items, the new forged wheels will improve acceleration, braking, ride
and traction. While smoother throttle response and slimmer exhaust heat shields
were both needed, it’s the new wheels that are going to make the biggest
difference to the supermoto-style naked roadster.
The
Dorsoduro 1200 actually share very little in the way of common parts. Instead
of simply enlarging the 750’s engine to achieve the 1200cc displacement,
all-new cases were designed to support the massively oversquare dimensions of
the 1200. Bore and stroke dimensions are 106.0 x 67.8mm, respectively, making
for an engine that technically has 1197cc of displacement. The motor looks
tailor-made to take on the GS and Ducati’s Multistrada with its 129bhp,
liquid-cooling and 90-degree format falling neatly between their respective
108bhp and 148bhp.
